In a debate between David Wood and Michael Shermer, Shermer made the common, yet ludicrous claim that "we are all atheists, I just go one God further". In response, Wood looked at his podium and spoke about how we might go about determining its origins. One person declares that the podium must have been made by many people. Another person says no, you just need one good podium maker. A third person says "we're all a-carpenters, I just go one carpenter further."
But the podium still exists. The a-carpenter has made a positive claim by its very nature. In making the negative claim "no one made the podium", he is making the positive claim that the podium came about by other means. In the same way, whether an atheist wants to admit it or not, he is making a positive claim, namely that the universe came about by other means.
When speaking about designed objects like podiums, our view on their origins matters. Designers will often include instructions or warnings. Without these, our uses of them might be different than intended. "Store in a cool place." "Dry clean only." "Not microwave safe." If you see your friend holding something interesting, you might ask "what's that?", and you'll expect a response about what the thing is and what it's used for.
In the same way, our world looks very much designed. If you believe it isn't, you'll look at it differently. If you don't think a bucket is designed to transport water, why would you use it for such? Speaking of water, which would you trust more? A clearly well built bridge, or a decorative bridge made of lolly sticks? Even your brain can only be trusted if we thoroughly reject atheism in favor of Christian theology. Side note: even other gods fall short here, as none of them account for our reasoning ability. Allah, for example, brags about being the greatest of deceivers (Qur'an 3:54). If Allah was God, one couldn't trust our reasoning because Allah could always be tricking us.
So clearly David was right. We can argue all day and night about who God is, but to go from one God to no gods at all is akin to saying the podium David spoke from is the result of someone tripping over a bag of tools next to an oak tree. It goes from theistic common sense to atheistic nonsense. "One less God" than Monotheism is absurd.
