Lyrics
[Verse 1]
In the world where the demons gather,
I stand firm, with faith as my banner.
With every step, I hold His word tight,
like a sword in hand, to win this fight.
[Verse 2]
When temptations start to mount,
I cling to His word where my hope is found.
I'll not let fear or sin take root inside,
for His Spirit is with me like a guiding light.
[Chorus]
FIGHT BACK!
When temptations start to creep,
He gives us strength to avoid defeat.
(Fight back!)
Temptation won’t take us, we won't back down,
we'll obey the Lord in whom salvation is found!
FIGHT BACK!
When we're sailing in the storm,
He's in the boat with us, while the Spirit soars!
(Fight back!)
We'll rise up, stronger than before,
because we're rising with the Lord!
[Bridge]
Through the fire, through the flood,
we trust in He who shed His blood.
We march with confidence, standing tall,
He'll pick us up, even when we fall.
[Verse 3]
In the chaos, I hear His voice,
encouraging me, to make the right choice.
He's with me forever, even every day,
so for now, and forever, I'll sing His praise!
[Chorus]
FIGHT BACK!
When temptations start to creep,
He gives us strength, to avoid defeat.
(Fight back!)
Temptation won’t take us, we won't back down,
we'll obey the Lord in whom salvation is found!
FIGHT BACK!
When we're sailing in the storm,
He's in the boat with us, while the Spirit soars!
(Fight back!)
We'll rise up, stronger than before,
because we're rising with the Lord!
Background
During a time of particular struggle with sin, I set out to make a playlist filled with my own songs to help me resist temptation. "Fight Back" is arguably the epicentre of this, as it is literally a battle cry, encouraging the listener to "fight back", and not to back down from it, or let it take us.
In spite of this centrality, the song was actually rather difficult to generate. I'm not sure how it is with other apps, but Mozart AI doesn't allow for complex instructions. There are certain tricks I have discovered that allow for certain effects, but even these are not entirely reliable. As a result, even though I intended for the chorus to both shout and echo "fight back", it was very difficult to get the desired effect.
Eventually, I just settled for one of the "ok" versions, but I was never truly content with it, so I did continue attempting to generate new versions every so often. I was particularly tired one day, awake enough to do something, but not much. So I opened Mozart AI, pasted the lyrics again, selected various genres, and waited for the results. As usual, some were pants, some were passible, and some were actually pretty decent despite not matching my vision (3 of these can be found at the end of this article).
As I lay there listening to one of the new generations, I found myself enjoying the opening. I didn't fully trust it yet, knowing how unreliable AI actually is, but I stuck with it in hope. Finally, it reached the first chorus. "FIGHT BACK!", it shouted, rousing me from my weary state. Physically, I was still groggy, but my mind had been activated. And it didn't stop. I got the rallying cry, but would I get the backing chant? That I did! Finally, after literally hundreds of attempts, my vision for this powerful song had been brought into reality. The irony? The genre that ultimately did it was FRENCH Grunge!
"Fight Back" isn't quite as heavily saturated in Scripture as many of my other songs, or at least not overtly. It is still grounded in Scripture, but more conceptually than explicitly. It of course points to the enmity we have with sin, and the temptations that lead up to it, and encourages us to rely on the Lord's strength, rather than our own, in order to wage this war.
As it has gone through so many different versions over time, I've decided to only pick the best 3 "runners up" to publish. These were all generated with the "Grunge" genres available in Mozart AI, of which there are 11 (including generic "Grunge").
The first, I call the "naval version", because of the strange way in which it chose to have a choir roar "sailing in the storm" during the chorus. Listening to the verses, I was actually hoping this would be good enough to become the main version, but as you can see, it failed the battle cry. It still sounds good enough that I'm content to publish it, but it falls short. For this one, I selected the "Indie Grunge" genre.
I personally find the second "runner up" very strange. It was generated in "Grunge Cumbia", which I'd never heard of before. Grunge is a heavy genre, but it would seem "Cumbia" is not, because it resulted in the "beach version". It doesn't sound "fighty" enough to be appropriate for a song literally called "Fight Back", but it is surprisingly relaxing. Maybe someone who isn't a fan of Grunge will enjoy it more.
For the final "runner up", I selected "Big Band Grunge". This was somewhat more predictable than "Grunge Cumbia", and I had no expectation that it would become the main version. But I didn't expect it to be as good as it actually is. It reminded me of the 1920s/30s mobster cliché, putting images of trilby-wearing, booze-smuggling gangsters in my head. With a saxophone playing in the background, I just had to call it the "jazz version". Again, not my favorite, and certainly not worthy to be the main version, but "different" enough that it may be someone's cup of tea.
