Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Every good and perfect thing
comes from God’s throne above1,
Every breath my soul can sing
is a gift of endless love2.
He made the sun, He made the moon,
He made the stars up high3!
So let's gather round this feast*,
and breathe a grateful sigh!
[Chorus]
We’re thanking the Lord for all of His grace!
For all the things He's given us on this Earth's rocky face!
Oh every prayer, and every song, we dedicate to Him,
for He fulfills His promise, He doesn't act upon a whim4.
But what brings us such great joy?
Oh let us thank the Lord for His Holy Baby Boy!
[Verse 2]
turned the water into wine7.
cast devils into swine10.
Of His plans, the prophets He told11,
the Scriptures they wrote down12,
then as it was foretold13,
He was born in that quiet town14.
[Chorus]
We’re thanking God for all of His gifts!
For His blessings and His guidance so that we don't go adrift15!
So let us all remember to lift a grateful prayer,
and do it without ceasing 'til we meet Him in the air16!
He's thwarting the devil's ploy17!
So we're thanking God for His Holy Baby Boy!
[Bridge]
Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for His enduring love18,
for gratitude fits His Church just like a glove,
so let us remember who came from above19!
[Final chorus]
Oh let us thank God for the King of kings20,
Even without an army, He's conquering our hearts,
so with the shield of faith we can extinguish Satan's darts23.
Our Kingdom can't be destroyed24!
So let's thank the Father for His Holy Baby Boy!
Yeah we're thanking God for His Holy Baby Boy!
Hey, we're thanking God for His Holy Baby Boy...
*So let's gather in the pews [Church version]
Background
In 2024, I saw a meme that stuck with me. I can't remember the wording, but the content was that if we're going to complain about Christmas music being played before Thanksgiving, a solution would be to write some more Thanksgiving songs. It seemed like a decent idea, so I started with "Thankful that Kamala didn't win", celebrating the defeat of Little Miss "you're at the wrong rally".
But I didn't want to stop with political satire, and so I planned to write genuine, heartfelt, Thanksgiving-style worship song. The result was "Holy Baby Boy", a song dedicated to the child born to us, who is called "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6).
While the song is designed primarily for Thanksgiving, I did intend it to be sufficiently ambiguous that it can also bleed into Christmas. On top of that, because it is so heavily saturated in Scripture, it only takes the alteration of a single line to make it as non-seasonal as the Scriptures it references (which is why I have added a "Church version" of the lyrics).
Knowing that the AI will almost never produce a tune like the one I have in my head, I find it helpful to base the lyrical structure of my own music on an existing song. In this case, Apple TV's "Spirited" features a song called "Bringing Back Christmas", which is one of the few Christmas songs I listen to of my own free will. Ironically, the two songs could not be more opposed in themes. In "Bringing Back Christmas", Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds) focuses on utilising humanity's natural tribal instincts to foster Consumerism, whereas "Holy Baby Boy" centres around thanking God in every circumstance for the greatest blessing He could - and did - give us: Jesus!
Being such a poor songwriter, most of my songs follow a predictable structure. In particular, the chorus is usually copied and pasted, occasionally with the final line of the final chorus altered. For "Holy Baby Boy", I decided to experiment a bit. Each chorus follows the theme, but rephrases it in different words, many of which tie back in to different Scriptures. The phrase "our Kingdom can't be destroyed" in the last one initially felt a bit iffy, because it does rephrase Daniel 7:14, which is about Christ and His Kingdom. But obviously, it still works, because the subjects of a king can refer to his Kingdom as "our kingdom", as surely as a child can refer to their father's house as "our house". So, it's not that we're attempting to usurp His rule, but rather, rejoice that we are eternally subject to it.
When generating music with AI, I tend to get mixed results. Some songs are abysmal, nothing like what I desired, and of course they get deleted. Others are ok, but not quite what I was going for. I might keep them, I might delete them, it just depends on exactly how "not quite" they are. Finally, you get the "absolute bangers". On occasion, these coincide, and I end up with two versions of the same song. After sending both of these out to several friends, asking which is better, the answer came back inconclusive. Some loved one, some loved the other. It ended up being a perfect tie. So, I broke the tie and selected the one that most gets my heart pumping. But I decided to let the other version be published too. Aside from the fact it's still a good song, my mother suggested it actually sounds more Christmasy, whereas the main version sounds a bit "twee". I'll let you decide which you like best, and out of pure curiosity, I'm even going to leave a poll to see which one really is the more popular version.

I like both versions equally

I dislike the main version, but like the Christmas version.
