This is our God

Even as Christians, it can be easy to forget just how glorious a God we serve. In many ways, even the Bible, though it be the very word of God, is insufficient to convey just who He is. This is not a failure of the Bible, but a failure of us, as humans. One could no more teach a man to fully know God than I could teach my dog advanced maths.

When we look at creation, we often see strange things we don't understand. In fact, some very foolish people use this ignorance to justify either rejecting (they will say "reinterpreting") God's word, or rejecting God altogether. But what we often forget is that God has nothing to learn. There is nothing you can teach Him, there are no arguments you can win with Him, He does not need you to suggest anything to Him. Oh the depths of the wisdom and knowledge of the Lord, who has been His counsellor?

And then there's the sense of entitlement we have. We often oppose God's commandments, or insist on a specific reward for a specific good deed. But tell me, where did you get the means to do good or evil? When you "lend" or "give" to the Lord, you're really just redistributing what He has given you. God doesn't owe us anything. God shouldn't run His world in a way we want Him to. Who does God answer to? Who does God owe anything to? It would be like expecting a reward for repaying someone the money you borrowed from them. "Hey, remember that £20 I gave you?" "Yeah..." "You owe me for that." "Uh, no, I lent you £40..."

Truly, God is unsearchable. He is the First and the Last. What's even more amazing is His humility about it. Does He demand what's rightfully His? Sure. You better worship Him. But look at Jesus. He didn't come as a conquering warlord. He didn't come as a king or an emperor. When people scoffed, mocked and threatened Him, He rebuked them rather than squash them like bugs. When they crucified Him, He begged the Father to forgive them. He didn't jump down and beat them with it. He didn't come to be served, as if He needed it, but to serve, though the ones He served with kindness deserved only to be served with an eternal prison sentence. This is our God. Incomprehensible, yet He knows us, and desires a relationship with us.
