Whether or not you celebrate, make sure you always worship

When Easter comes around, it is wise to ask if we should be celebrating this Sunday? Many Christians around the world certainly answer "yes". Easter is a very popular occasion within the Church. But there are those who argue that it is wrong to do so. Easter is pagan, they say. Why? Let's not go into their reasons, as they are too numerous and spread apart. If you want to know, seek them out and ask.

I do, however, want to share one example I came across that made me laugh. One of the reasons they claimed it is pagan is that Easter comes from the name Ishtar, a pagan goddess of war and sex. This person argued that if we are to celebrate this occasion, we should not call it Easter, but instead call it Resurrection Sunday. Why did this make me laugh? Because the proposed replacement name also comes from Paganism. Sunday literally translates to "day of the sun" (of course), because ancient pagans would worship the sun on that day. So, is the replacement name any better? Clearly, the answer is no. If we are to use the logic, Resurrection Sunday would be better only in the sense that the sun god is less violent and depraved than Ishtar. Idolatry is idolatry.

This comedic failure demonstrates something: This dispute over whether we should celebrate Easter falls under what God, through Paul, calls a "doubtful disputation". In fact, it is one of the most explicit of them. In Romans 14, food and festivals are explicitly mentioned. One person esteems one day (in this case, Easter Sunday) above another; another esteems all days alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. Whoever observes it observes it to the Lord, whoever does not observe it does not observe it to the Lord.

So should we celebrate Easter? Honestly, it is entirely your choice. If you think it is pagan, do not celebrate Easter. No one has the right to tell you that you absolutely must celebrate this Sunday, especially not in violation of your conscience. In the same way, if you want to celebrate Easter, and especially if you feel obligated to do so, go ahead and celebrate. I promise you, Jesus will not condemn you for remembering the day He paid for your sins and walked out of His grave.

So whether you celebrate or not, may God bless you. You will stand, because God makes you stand. Celebrate, don't celebrate, just worship. That is how we please God.
